Nobel Prize for ANU astrophysicist

The ANU is fairly excited right now, as Prof. Brian Schmidt has been announced as a joint winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize for Physics (here’s what the Canberra Times had to say). His research showed that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate, rather than the expansion slowing down.

Prof. Schmidt is the 12th Australian to win a Nobel Prize. It’s a fairly safe bet that I’ll never win one (certainly not for physics anyway!), but it highlights the importance of striving to produce high-quality, innovative research. You never know what might happen.
