Monday Awesome: Rats like to help each other

Today’s Awesome is a piece of research from Science.

The aim of the research was to see if rats can show empathy, in this case, to free another rat from a trap. Rats are known to have emotion contagion – which is when one rat panics and freezes, the rest do too. But in this research, it was found that the free rats did actually work to liberate their friends, instead of panicking.

It has been neatly summarised by one of the authors in this video below. The whole paper can be found here, but it’s pretty dry, so I think the video is a neat way to get the point across to a broader audience.
